Accidental Fuel Spill In East Brandywine

By East Brandywine Fire Company
December 15, 2014

Shortly before lunch, EBFC was dispatched to a fuel spill reported to be upwards of 100 gallons. Upon arrival it was determined to be a large kerosene tank in a garage with a broken dump valve. Thanks to the quick thinking of the engine crew and the homeowner only a minimal amount of kerosene made its way to the yard from the garage. They were able to temporarily plug the broken valve and contain the fuel already spilled.

Assistant 49 contacted the Chester County Hazmat team and was advised their services were not required. Glen Moore Fire Company was requested to bring the containment trailer to transfer the remainder of the tank's contents into a 55 gallon drum. The crews put down oil dry to soak up the remainder of the kerosene and contacted an environmental clean up team to help the homeowner.

Units: Engine 49-1, Utility 49, Car 2
