Volunteers Respond to Late Night Hay-bale Fire

By East Brandywine Fire Company
September 27, 2017

On Tuesday night September 26th East Brandywine Fire Company volunteers were dispatched to the area of Ramblewood Drive for a reported brush fire. While en-route Assistant 49 (D'Amico) was made aware the caller indicated the "flames were as high as the trees".

West Brandywine Police Department arrived on location and reported a large stack of hay-bales were on fire in a field.

Shortly after dispatch Engine 49-1, Engine 49-5, and Ladder 49 arrived on location and started the long tenuous process of extinguishing the bales. West Brandywine Township Public Works was requested to assist with a back-hoe in order to help spread the bales apart. Interim Director of Public Works Tom Mayer made his way to the scene shortly after the request was made to lend his support.

Quick thinking volunteers established a water supply by stretching a 3" hose line across a field and through a tree line to a hydrant located on Ramblewood Drive.

Personnel remained on-scene until 2am and subsequently have been back to the site multiple times to extinguish hot spots.

Special thanks to the West Brandywine Township Public Works Department, West Brandywine Police Department, and local farmers Gary Hoover and Martin Weaver for their assistance on the call.

Also thank-you to the Downingtown Fire Department for covering our local while we were out extinguishing the fire.
