| Over the past two weeks, the members of East Brandywine Fire Company have been focusing on Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations, specifically utilizing the FAST Board, a specialized piece of equipment designed to quickly secure, package, and maneuver a downed firefighter through confined spaces and challenging structural obstacles.
Crews once again took advantage of the acquired structure in West Brandywine Township to conduct realistic training scenarios. During these evolutions, firefighters were tasked with locating a simulated downed firefighter, assessing their condition, packaging them onto the FAST Board, and safely removing them from the structure, including navigating them up a flight of stairs and out of the building.
Each member had the opportunity to participate in multiple evolutions over the course of the training. Following each scenario, crews gathered to discuss what went well, identify areas for improvement, and share lessons learned to enhance future operations.
East Brandywine Fire Company is regularly dispatched as the Rapid Intervention Team for several neighboring departments. While we take this responsibility very seriously and train extensively for these situations, we hope it is a skillset we never have to utilize on an actual emergency scene.
A special thank you to everyone involved in making these training opportunities possible. Continuous training and preparation help ensure that when our firefighters need help, we are ready to answer the call.
